Oral Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) Study

Dr. Abie Mendelsohn, MD, FACS, in the UCLA Department of Head and Neck Surgery is looking for HEALTHY male volunteers, 45 to 65 years of age, who have never been diagnosed with Oral Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) infection

Oral cancer and oropharyngeal cancer are important health topics that confront many Americans each year. Known risks factors for these cancers include smoking, heavy drinking, and HPV infection. In particular, men between the ages of 45 and 65 have the highest chance of developing active oral HPV infections. HPV infection can be acquired by sexual contact, such as oral sex. While these cancers are not being studied with this research, with greater understanding of HPV infections we may better understand the development of cancers for future patients.

If you volunteer to participate in this study, the researcher will ask you to do the following:

• Complete a short survey
• Produce a small saliva sample (by spitting) for HPV testing
o These will be performed at the UCLA Clinical and Translational Resarch Center (CTRC)
• Your results will be communicated to you by telephone approximately one week after saliva collection
o If your results are negative for HPV infection, your participation in the study will be complete.

o If your results are postive for HPV infection, you will be asked to complete a separate consent form to undergo a formal clinical head and neck evaluation and examination designed to assess the mucosal lining of the mouth and throat for the presence of irregularities:
